U of MN - SE Steam Plant

The Steam plant has proved to be a concern for the surrounding neighborhoods in Southeast particularily Marcy-Holmes where the steam plant is located. there was intense debate regarding its location along the river and the need to upgrade the equipment in 1996-1997 ( related articles in the MN daily).

Ultimately it was decided that the steam plant would remain along the river and continue to burn coal.  But the equipment was upgrade with more efficient boilers and state of the art controls which currently meets clean air standards.  After speaking with University representatives we found that the main burner can burn everything from coal to biomass like oat hulls.

When we met last summer, they were making some cosmetic upgrades to the building because it is adjacent to a city park and the Stone Arch Bridge.  Emissions of concern are SO2, NOx and Lead.  See chart.
